Ballistic Vehicle LWIR Signature Predictions.

Abstract

The purpose of this note is to describe the equations used for optical signature prediction of an object in the exoatmosphere, the approximations introduced, and the resulting accuracy of the computations. The signature of an object in a ballistic trajectory about the earth is calculated as seen by either a stationary or a moving observer. The computer porgrams written to support these calculations have been used to date to generate pre-flight signatures for an ICBM flight and post-flight analysis of a WSMR sounding rocket flight.
