Abstract

Research has discovered an RDX (Cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine) synthesis that does not liberate H2O and does not produce by-product HMX. The key intermediate is 1,3,5-triacetylhexahydro-s-triazine, formed by the reaction of acetonitrile with formaldehyde; nitrolysis of the triazine with 100% HNO3 yields high-purity RDX. US Patent No. 3,178,430. The report includes 10 monthly research letters on a study of the RDX synthesis from acetonitrile with the aims of obtaining (a) maximum conversion and yield to triazine using lowest cost ingredients and preferably a reaction medium that is compatible with the nitrolysis reaction, (b) complete HNO3 consumption to avoid the need for acid recovery and concentration, and (c) and RDX product of high purity and stability.
