Design Methods for Specifying Handling Qualities for Control Configured Vehicles.

Abstract

A method for predicting aircraft pilot ratings which is applicable to control configured vehicles (CCV's) is developed based on aircraft performance and pilot workload. A discussion of this method of handling quality analysis, and a description of four random tracking pilot rating correlations developed using the method are presented in Volume I of the report. A literature survey classifying the most recent reports applicable to flying qualities is tabulated. A user's manual for McPilot, a general purpose digital computer program developed to implement the method and correlate pilot rating data, is presented in Volume II. The correlations that were developed are used to evaluate the pilot ratings of two conventional contemporary fighter aircraft configurations. The correlations are also applied to two CCV fighter configurations for which limited amounts of handling quality data had been obtained through manned aircraft simulations. (Author)
