Magnetic Field Annihilation of Impulsive Current Sheets.

Abstract

The report describes additional results obtained during the past year on the magnetic field annihilation impusive plasma accelerator. Flat spiral coils 40 CM in diameter separated by 3.6 cm are used to produce anti-parallel radial fields in an axially symmetric field configuration. These fields exist for a few microseconds as a 5 kilojoule capacitor bank is discharged through the coils producing planar plasma current sheets that are accelerated axially toward the midplane between the coils where they collide. Radial magnetic field embedded in the plasma diffuses through the plasma after collision and is annihilated at the midplane. The data and analysis presented here complete the investigation of the two-coil accelerator.
