An Interactive Graphics Program for Calculating and Plotting Root Loci.

Abstract

One of the more important tools in the analysis and design of classical control systems is the root locus. This report describes the history of one program (ROOTL) which, as a result of this study, has been modified to run interactively on the Control Data Corporation 274 Interactive Graphics System. The batch version of the program, ROOTL, uses the branch following technique of Ash and Ash discussed in another paper and is the starting point of this study. The interactive graphics version of the program, GROOTL, uses the same algorithm but has the advantage of allowing the user to work interactively with the program. The user can execute the calculation algorithm, observe the results in the form of a root locus plot on the display screen of the 274 console, and then modify the open-loop transfer function (or any other input data) as desired.
