An Examination of the Parsons and Hulse Papers on Rates of Advance.

Abstract

An analysis is made of two seminal documents, both written in 1954, which have formed the presumed basis for rates of advance curves used in simulation. The Parsons and Hulse papers are examined in terms of their character and content and primarily to examine their sources in order to see to what degree the papers reflected the historical record they claimed to have used. It became apparent that the papers were published as hasty, rough drafts, inputs to a larger study, and that their contents have been grossly exaggerated in the succeeding years by model builders. The numerous specified and unspecified qualifications surrounding the data have been overlooked in the transformation of the original data. Only part of the data the authors presented is historically verifiable from the now-existing records. (Author)
