Compton Scattering by K-Shell Electrons of Heavy Elements.

Abstract

A method for measuring the doubly-differential cross section for Compton scattering is presented. The general shape of the doubly-differential cross-section distribution for 662-keV photons incident on gold is determined for a scatter angle of 90. The distribution exhibits a scattered peak which is wider than predicted by the Compton formula. The energy of the center of the peak is 25 keV higher than predicted for photons Compton scattered by free electrons, indicating a positive Compton defect. A large increase in the relative magnitude of the cross-section distribution is observed at low scattered photon energies. (Author)
