Louse-Borne Relapsing Fever in Man

Abstract

Six Ethiopians with louse-borne relapsing fever died suddenly 4 to 12 hours after being treated with antibiotics. Autopsies demonstrated a diffuse myocarditis, hepatitis, and splenic microabscesses. The patients probably died of sudden myocardial failure during the hypotensive phase of the induced crisis. Autopsies on two additional patients with louse-borne relapsing fever, whose deaths appeared to be unrelated to the crisis, showed similar changes.
