A Probability Model of the Aircraft Separation Problem.
Abstract
The paper presents a mathematical model of the relationship between aircraft separation and flight variability for aircraft on airways routes in terms of collision probability. The development yields a closed form of this relationship which shows the effects of the three space dimensions and time itself on this problem. A discussion of the assumptions and approximations of the formulation are set forth in an appendix to the paper. A second appendix offers a manner for determining a point of diminishing return which provides a low collision hazard and at the same time trades off a small amount of separation to be provided for the aircraft.
