Improving Reading Comprehension: Measuring Readability.

Abstract

A standardized method, called programmed prose, has been developed which can be used to automatically convert prose training material into a form which forces trainees to read the material with at least a minimal level of comprehension. A new method for measuring prose difficulty, called the Rauding Scale of Prose Difficulty, was also developed and investigated so that the effect of the reading ability and reading difficulty differences could be better measured. The Rauding Scales was found to correlate higher with the actual grade level where curriculum passages were used in school than six other readability measures. (Modified author abstract)
