Procurement and Retention of Navy Physicians,

Abstract

The report evaluates the current incentive plans for recruitment and retention of physicians in the all-volunteer environment of today's Navy: a medical scholarship program and an annual bonus plan for supplementing salary. Under the scholarship program, the military pays tuition and fees for Medical education in return for a period of obligatory service. The study discusses whether this program would enable the Navy to attract and retain enough physicians to meet staffing levels, as compared to alternative methods of recruitment.
