Development of TiAl by Extrusion of Elemental Powder Mixture.

Abstract

The experimental study investigated the preparation of TiAl (gamma-phase) directly from a mixture of the elemental powders. Selected properties of this material were compared with those of TiAl manufactured from prealloyed powders. Densification of the powders was achieved by direct extrusion at an elevated temperature. The powders were extruded while encased in a titanium billet. The process variables that were investigated were: pre-sinter conditions, heat treating conditions, and effect of extrusion conditions on the physical properties of the product.
