The RAND Weather Data Bank (RAWDAB). An Evolving Base of Accessible Weather Data.

Abstract

The Rand Weather Data Bank was designed to meet the demand for realistic weather inputs to studies of defense operations and defense systems that can be influenced by weather conditions. It files--in a uniform format--the observations taken at selected stations around the globe and over periods of years up to nineteen. The information is intensive: up to 50 basic weather elements are extracted or computed from a single weather observation. This data base contains weather information from over 47 million observations; the average size of the files (one file per station) is 57,500 records (one record per weather ovservation). Flow charts and one of the programs for the conversion of the data into standard format are presented, as well as tables specifying the present content of this still growing data bank. (Author)
