The Role of Selected Organizational Variables in Learning from Written Instruction

Abstract

Improvements in the readability of Navy textual material obviously depends upon such traditional factors as word and sentence length. It would seem reasonable, however, that if text is to be readable, but also learnable and recallable, factors relating to how the ideas in the text are organized will be important. Two experiments investigated the recall of text with different organizational schemes, read differing numbers of times, by high and low verbal ability trainees. Inferences for both educational practice and research are drawn from these findings.
