Electroencephalograms of Children with Normal and Pathological Conditions,

Abstract

The typical feature of the EEG of a healthy child aged up to 7 years is the existence of slow forms of electrical activity (delta- and teta-waves). It is not until the age of 7-8 years that there appears on the EEG of a child a regular alpha-rhythm, which is somewhat reduced in frequency (7-9 oscillations a second). However, in addition to the alpha-rhythm there are also retained the delta-waves, which are especially steadily expressed in the anterior sections of the hemispheres. These peculiarities of a child's EEG attest to the lower level of functional mobility of the child's coritcal cells as compared with adult ones and must be taken into consideration when interpreting the EEG of children with Focal damage of the brain. On the basis of numerous studies it can be concluded that in children with a tumor of the brain, unlike adults, there are cruder general-cerebral changes in the electrical activity.
