The Effects of Measurement Resolution on the Descriptions of Target Visibility.

Abstract

HELAST II raised the question as to the appropriateness of using a 25-meter measurement resolution in describing tactical tank target exposures for assessing weapon effectiveness. Essentially, it appeared that a 25-meter resolution indicated half as many exposures of twice the duration as actually occurred during the HELAST II study. This report presents a reanalysis of the HELAST II continuous target description data with varying measurement resolutions in order to assess the effects they might have on apparent target visibility. The HELAST II continuous data on seven tactical tank paths, as seen from five observer positions, were analyzed with measurement resolutions of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 50 meters. Additionally, the effects of target height were assessed to estimate how vehicle height might affect intervisibility of presented targets. (Author)
