A Multiple--Scale Research Program in Tropical Meteorology.

Abstract

During the 1969 Barbados Field Program a constant level balloon was entrained into a cumulus congestus cloud. Radar observations, cloud photos and satellite pictures furnished patterns of local island cloud array and synoptic-scale cloud field. Balloon's vertical velocity profile is compared to that derived from a steady state jet model of a cumulus cloud. Using Fourier considerations, wind data derived from constant density balloon flights over Barbados are used to examine small scale motions in the boundary layer. Diurnal shifts between small mechanical and larger thermal scales are tentatively indicated. (Author)
