Measurement of Transient Bore-Surface Temperatures in 7.62mm Gun Tubes

Abstract

As a segment of a gun tube erosion analysis program, techniques were studied to measure transient bore-surface temperatures in 7.62MM M60 machine gun barrels. Rapid-response surface thermocouples (Chromel/Alumel and iron/nickel) were used with high-speed recorders and play-back systems to follow the rise and decay characteristics of the pulsed heating phenomenon during firing.
