Atomic Collisions and Plasma Physics.

Abstract

Research results concerning atmospheric ion reactions are briefly summarized. Measurements of the coefficients of recombination of electrons with positive ions of the H3O(+).(H2O)n series have been carried out. Clustering of NO(+) ions to N2 and to H2O has been studied to clarify the cluster-switching sequence responsible for D-region production of H3O(+).(H2O)n series ions. Reaction rates of O(+) with N2 and O2 to form NO(+) and O2(+) at high ion temperatures (F-region conditions) have been determined. Ionization and electron heating by metastable atoms have been studied in very pure helium afterglows. (Modified author abstract)
