Development of Criteria for Printing Color Reconnaissance Stereo Strip Photography for Interpretation Under Dynamic Viewing Conditions.

Abstract

The purpose of the report is to determine, in searching for man-made targets in strip reconnaissance color photography, how the variables of camera lens convergence angle and film contrast contribute to performance and to develop a quantitative chromostereopsis test and determine the distribution of this phenomenon among observers. Sixty-three individuals were screened for their visual acuity, stereopsis, phorias at infinity and, 14 inches (color vision only at 14 inches). After brief training their target acquisition performance was measured using a Sonne SC-2 near-real-time display of 1:2580 scale reconnaissance chromatic imagery. The effects of convergence angles of 0, 10 and 20 degrees and of high, medium and low film contrasts were investigated. In preparing the stimuli a new target acquisition test was developed using Kodak SO-242 high resolution color film. The flights were made by the USAF over Ft. Riley, Kansas.
