An Extract from the Report on the Working Party on Gauging for Tape Controlled Machine Tools.

Abstract

The investigation described relates to the development of a piece of equipment which when integrated into a numerically controlled drilling machine prevents manufacture proceeding if the desired x and y table co-ordinate movements are out of tolerance. By concentrating in this area it was hoped to reduce scrap resulting from errors in table positioning and similarly by providing additional confidence to this part of the manufacturing operation, it was expected to materially reduce inspection costs. Possible applications concern components manufactured in small batches having a large number of holes to be drilled, bored, countersunk, etc. such as is found in the Aircraft industry.
