Millstone Hill Radar Propagation Study: Scientific Results. Part I.
Abstract
Satellites of the Navy Navigation Series were tracked simultaneously at UHF and L band to observe and measure the effects of ionospheric refraction, and UHF Thomson (incoherent) scatter soundings were made to study the ionosphere. The report presents the scientific results achieved during the course of the study. By averaging results obtained during many daytime satellite passes, the angular bias refraction of the UHF beacon signals caused by the earth's ionosphere was accurately determined. Good agreement was found between the measured values and predictions based upon ray-tracing studies (performed at BTL using incoherent-scatter electron-density profiles), together with real-time estimates of the electron content along the line-of-sight to the satellite by means of a differential-Doppler experiment.
