Rocket Instrumentation for Icecap 73A Auroral Measurements Program -- Black Brant 18.205-1,
Abstract
On 27 March 1973 at 0937 GMT, Black Brant A18.205-1 was launched from the Poker Flat Research Range in Alaska as part of ICECAP 73 - a continuing auroral measurements program. The payload penetrated a bright, stable auroral arc permitting coordinated, simultaneous measurement of the several auroral parameters. Measurements were made of near infrared emissions (1.6 micrometers to 5.4 micrometers), selected visible and ultraviolet emissions, auroral electron fluxes, ion and neutral composition, and ionospheric electron and ion densities and temperatures. Special emphasis was placed on making measurements of infrared emissions in order to increase the knowledge of auroral chemistry and physics and to update predictive computer codes.
