The Importance of Situations versus Personal Qualifications for General Manager Development.

Abstract

What is the relative importance of situational variables versus personal qualifications for a man to reach a position as a General Manager. Previous publications have concentrated on the personal qualifications of Stanford MBAs who became General Managers five to ten years after school. This report concentrates on situational variables that seemed to be significant based on information obtained from questionnaires and interviews. These situational variables seem to be at least as important as the personality and interest variables. Size of company, growth of company, industry, and presence of a sponsor or Godfather who believes in the young man seem to be important. (Author)
