Development and Astronomical Application of a High Quantum Efficiency Infrared Upconverter.

Abstract

The report describes the state of upconverter development, develops the theory of upconversion to a point where it can be compared with experimental results, and treats the many practical factors involved in the successful operation of an upconverter. Special attention is given to the description of a pump light feedback technique that considerably improves the quantum efficiency of the upconversion process. Experimental laboratory results are presented. Most significant among them is the achievement of quantum conversion efficiency much higher than previously reported. The experimental results also suggest the practicality of the upconverter spectrometer. Successful astronomical tests of the upconverter are described. These results are the first ir detections of astronomical objects by an upconverter.
