Pool Burning: A Review.

Abstract

The review covers literature on fundamental aspects of the combustion of liquid fuel at a free surface and includes: influence of atmospheric conditions, fuel properties, diameter of container and partial venting of container on the burning characteristics, particularly the burning rate; temperature distribution in the liquid and the phenomena of hot zone formation and boil-over; prevailing concepts of heat transfer from the flame to the liquid; effect of water as a dispersed phase, and as a substrate, on burning.
