Solving the Linear Balance Equation Globally.

Abstract

The linear balance equation, which is used in meteorology to relate the geopotential phi and the stream function psi, is studied. The analytic solutions to the homogeneous equation are analyzed and shown to have singularities which influence numerical integration. A new approach, using finite elements, is proposed. (Author)
