Investigation of a Class-B Amplifier for Reactive Loads,

Abstract

The objective of the study was to determine the significance of reactive loading on a Class-B push-pull power amplifier. The load line is derived and shown to be an ellipse for all load phase angles except zero. The relationship between the elliptical load line and the transistor manufacturer's maximum ratings is explained. Power dissipation and efficiency quantities are derived, and a qualitative analysis of amplitude distortion is presented. Pertinent experimental results are compared with the theoretical predictions, and it is concluded that the derived equations for the load line and power relationships agree quite closely with the experimental results.
