Arctic Tent Stake
Abstract
In 1971 a need was expressed by US Army Alaska personnel for a means of driving tent stakes into arctic ice and permafrost without depleting human energy in that harsh environment. The manual driving of conventional stakes and pins required expenditure of an unacceptable level of human energy. Heavy conventional stake drivers weighed 30 to 70 pounds and were unacceptable for contemplated tactical operations. Based on test results generated by the contractor, LWL investigated and developed a new type tent stake specifically for use in arctic permafrost and ice. This item, the Arctic Tent Stake was successfully tested at Arctic Test Center, Alaska.
