Large Deflections of Spherical Shells under Concentrated, Distributed, and Ring Loading.

Abstract

The equations governing large axisymmetric deflections of clamped spherical shells under a variety of localized loadings are solved numerically. Solutions are obtained for both prebuckled and postbuckled states and results are compared with experimental studies of this problem class. The effects of distributing a given concentrated axial load over a small but finite area are discussed. Results indicate that for certain parameter ranges associated with distributed loads a type of local buckling may occur long before the critical load levels associated with concentrated loads. Curves depicting the variation of these buckling loads as a function of load diameter and shell geometry are obtained. (Author)
