Non-Linear Effects in Electromagnetic Wave Propagation.
Abstract
The purpose of the meeting was to bring together workers from the fields of ionospheric physics, laboratory plasma physics and controlled thermonuclear reaction (CTR) research to discuss non-linear effects in electromagnetic wave propagation. Such non-linear effects came into great prominence recently in connection with experiments in which very large RF powers are radiated from the ground towards the ionosphere at a frequency below the F2 penetration frequency. The experiments show the excitation of parametric instabilities. There also seems to be some evidence of anomalous plasma RF resistivity, causing an increase in the absorption of radio waves reflected from the 'heated' region. These experiments, their counterparts in laboratory plasma physics at microwaves and in CTR research at laser frequencies and the related theories were discussed at the meeting.
