Point Source Imaging with Electron Bombarded Silicon Camera Tubes.

Abstract

Low light level camera tubes employing a 27 mm diameter electron beam semiconductor EBS target have been tested at NAVAIRDEVCEN to determine their capabilities for imaging faint point images. Horizontal and vertical point spread profiles have been determined. The degree of image spreading (blooming) on overload was also determined. The results indicate that at standard television rates, large target EBS tubes are capable of detecting 16th visual magnitude stars through the atmosphere with a 48-inch, F/2.5 telescope. Extending the integration time to one second may enable these tubes to detect 19th magnitude stars. (Author)
