Compressed Speech: Potential Application for Air Force Technical Training.

Abstract

Time-compressed speech (also denoted as compressed speech, speeded speech, or accelerated speech) is an extension of the normal recording procedure for reproducing the spoken word. Compressed speech can be used to achieve dramatic reductions in listening time without significant loss in comprehension. The implications of such temporal reductions in the educational setting are that time savings can be used functionally to review, repeat or extend the material which was originally presented. This report includes a definition and description of compressed speech techniques as they have been evolved, a discussion of certain methodological issues engendered by the current literature, a summary of selected literature (grouped by system topics), and a discussion of current and potential studies, possible applications, and general recommendations concerning the impact of compressed speech on technical training in the Air Force.
