A Set-Point in Temperature Regulation: Analogy or Reality,
Abstract
A temperature regulator may be defined as an organism that can activate appropriate behavioral and autonomic responses which minimize deviations of the core temperature from an optimal temperature for some or all of the body functions. This definition does not specify the precision of the regulator; it does not specify the optimal temperature nor does it specify that regulation occur at all times during the life of the organism. The definition does imply that there exists some mechanism for comparing body temperature with optimal temperature. If the difference is plus, i.e. body temperature greater than optimal temperature, at least one response can be made to reduce the body temperature. Likewise, if the difference is minus, at least one response can be activated to increase the body temperature. This theory is explored by the author.
