Physical Inventory Discrepancy Research Criteria,
Abstract
The Department of Defense's basic program to establish uniform and improved practices for researching potential inventory discrepancies is provided in DODINST 4140.35. The policies provided by the instruction are directed toward services with centralized accountability and requisitioning. In order to have a viable program in its non-centralized situation, the Navy modified DOD criteria to consider the comparatively smaller depth of stocks carried at Navy stock points. This resulted in lowering the threshold for researching a potential error. The rationale for development of the DOD and Navy criteria for researching potential inventory discrepancies is not apparent. Methods described in this report provide an analytical basis whereby the decision to research a proposed inventory adjustment can be quantified. (Author)
