A Calculation of Heat Transfer Through a Graded Ceramic Coating.

Abstract

A computer calculation was made to determine the change in heat-transfer values for a superalloy tube, having a 0.250-inch outside diameter by 0.150-inch inside diameter, by varying the structure of a five-layer graded cermet coating on the exterior of the tube. Variations in the coating structure were made by changing the thickness and conductivity of individual layers. To compute 672 independent heat-transfer values, 21 different conductivity distributions and 32 different thickness distributions were utilized. The computer-generated values were examined for given thickness distributions as functions of the conductivity distributions. Analysis of these heat-transfer values indicates that equivalent thermal insulation can be provided over a range of coating thicknesses by controlling the structure of the coating.
