A Prototype Ring Interface for the NPS Data Communication Ring.

Abstract

The architecture and hardware/firmware design of a prototype microcontrolled Ring Interface (RI) for the proposed Naval Postgraduate School Data Communication Ring System is presented. A microcontroller and its associated assembly language, SMAL (Symbolic Microcontroller Assembly Language), are discussed and the Ring Interface Program (written in SMAL) is also included along with the respective machine code version. Finally, the expected capabilities, limitations, and tradeoffs are presented with possible long-term improvements. (Modified author abstract)
