Optical and ESR Studies of Iron Doped Lead Azide Powders

Abstract

Optical reflectance and electron spin resonance spectra have been obtained for iron doped lead azide prepared by several different procedures. The results indicate that iron is incorporated in lead azide as either Fe(2+) or Fe(3+) depending upon the method of preparation. Based upon the electron spin resonance data, it is suggested that Fe(3+) ions in the lead azide lattice are in a highly perturbed environment and are probably closely associated with the charge compensating defect. Models are proposed for the various types of defect associates which can occur.
