Studies of the Army Aviation (V/STOL) Environment. Report No. 4. Distribution of Mean Monthly Precipitation and Rainfall Intensities.

Abstract

The report presents the best available information concerning the worldwide distribution of monthly precipitation amounts and rainfall intensities in order to provide an improved basis for the establishment of environmental criteria for the design and testing of Army Aviation (V/STOL) aircraft. The data are presented in a series of maps, including: mean monthly precipitation for January, April, July, and October; rainfall intensities equalled or exceeded 1.0, 0.5, and 0.1% of the time during January, April, July, and October in Eurasia; and rainfall amounts for 30-minute and 60-minute durations with a 10-year return period in Canada. conterminous United States, the Hawaiian Islands, and Puerto Rico. The areas of minimum and maximum values are discussed in the text. The maximum precipitation amounts and intensities identified in this study are found in the tropics, especially in South and Southeast Asia. (Author)
