Measuring Soil Properties in Vehicle Mobility Research. Report 6. Resistance of Coarse-Grained Soils to High-Speed Penetration

Abstract

The purpose of the study reported herein was to describe quantitatively: The resistance of air-dry sand to vertical penetration by a variety of sizes and shapes of cones and flat plates over a range of penetration velocities; the influence of moisture content on the resistance of sand to low- speed vertical penetrations by the standard WES cone; and, the resistance imparted to cones and flat blades tested horizontally over a range of speeds in air-dry sand.
