Strain Energy Density Criterion Applied to Crack and Notch Problems.

Abstract

One of the most important purposes of the application of the strain energy density theory was to join the behavior of cracks to that of notches. This has essentially been accomplished through the addition of another constant, a length parameter. By specifying the failure to occur at an interior element of the material, the local singular behavior of the line crack is avoided, hence disposing of a barrier that has separated notch and crack failure theories. Another important result was the description of the phenomenon of post-fracture behavior. The local behavior has been shown to agree well with observable details of crack paths emanating from a notch tip.
