Research in Ionospheric and Airglow Phenomena.

Abstract

The research in the final report may be divided into two areas. The first area deals with dynamic disturbances in the upper ionosphere. This includes (1) an analysis of a particular fairly well established TID in both the northern and the southern hemisphere, (2) the effect of atmospheric gravity waves on the mid-latitude ionosphere, (3) the effect of particle precipitation on the polar ionosphere and Universal Time Control. The second area deals with a detailed investigation into the possible origin of anomalous auroral sounds. After exhaustive analysis into every conceivable cause it was felt that brush discharge with aurorally associated electric fields is the most likely explanation. (Modified author abstract)
