Charged Particle Beam-Plasma Interactions for Thermonuclear Power Generation.

Abstract

A beam-plasma instability generated by a beam with a single speed of rotation about a static magnetic field is investigated. The linear growth rates of such an instability are calculated for waves near the upper hybrid frequency of the plasma. The non-linear saturation mechanism of this instability is examined and it is found that beam particle trapping exists and is analogous to the one dimensional case. An experimental investigation of the instability is reported on and several novel techniques for diagnostics are used. (Author)
