Research in Atmospheric Acoustics.

Abstract

The report is a review of research in atmospheric acoustics at the Dallas Seismological Observatory over a period of about 34 months. The experimental work can be roughly divided in three phases. First involved the building of arrays of microbarographs and anemometers, and the collecting of data from these instruments in digital formats. Secondly, a suite of software programs were developed to process the data from these arrays (and also data in similar format from Alaska and from England). These programs ranged from simple editing routines to sophisticated array processing techniques which advanced the state-of-the-art. And, lastly, the processed data were used in interpretations of various atmospheric processes. These ranged from subsonic wind associated phenomena to waves propagating at acoustic velocities which were due to atmospheric explosions. (Modified author abstract)
