On the Study of the Antigenic Structure of the Skin,

Abstract

Presently there is accumulated a not-insignificant body of data testifying to the role of auto-immume reactions in the pathogenesis of a number of diseases of the blood, liver, kidneys, and other organs and organic systems of man. There exist reports from several dermatologists on the possibility of auto-immunization with the proteins of one's own skin. Such auto-immunizing skin conditions may arise only where the skin contains its own 'skin' antigenic components, distinguished from serum proteins contained in the skin, and if these components have antigenic properties for the organism, or acquire such properties via the influence of some factors.
