Plasma Production by Beam-Plasma Discharge.

Abstract

Plasma production by a beam-plasma discharge in magnetic field has been experimentally investigated. The beam plasma instability occurring in the axial density gradient of a beam produced plasma is measured. Under the proper conditions the waves, with omega < (omega sub c), will grow and decay completely in the inhomogeneous region. The decay is found to result from Landau damping of the wave by the beam. The spatial evolution of beam thermalization along the discharge has been measured. At beam to plasma density ratio smaller than 1/100 plasma production is dominated by the plasma electrons which are heated by rf fields resulting from beam-plasma interaction. The power balance of the beam-plasma interaction has been studied. (Modified author abstract)
