System Identification: A State Space Approach,

Abstract

The report solves a general system identification problem. The problem is general in the sense that it is couched in an abstract mathematical setting which covers several specific cases. It can be stated as follows: Suppose that a causal system represented by an operator on a Hilbert resolution space (a Hilbert space together with an arbitrary resolution of the identify) is not known, but its responses to certain 'input' vectors are. The problem is to process this information so that the operator can be recovered, or identified. This dissertation shows that because the unknown operator was assumed to be causal, careful attention must be given to the time structure--time structure being provided by the resolution of the identity--of the information before this problem can be solved.
