Machine Casting of Ferrous Alloys

Abstract

The general objective of this program is to develop an integrated automatic casting process of ferrous alloys. Our approach during the first year of the contract has been directed toward three major areas. (1) Design and construct an experimental melting and casting unit capable of evaluating rheocasting and conventional casting processes. (2) Determine the feasibility of a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) valve for controlling metal flow. (3) Develop a mold coating for graphite or some other suitable mold material that will provide the properties required of a permanent mold in the automatic casting process envisioned. The melting and casting operation will take place entirely under an inert atmosphere.
