Plan for a Computer-Based Consultant System.

Abstract

The report describes the goals and plans for a five-year project to develop a computer-based system that will serve as an expert consultant to a human apprentice. Together, the system and the apprentice will be engaged in a task of 'checking out' and repairing electromechanical equipment in a workstation domain. The demonstration system will give the human apprentice advice about how to diagnose equipment faults, how to repair them, and how to assemble and disassemble equipment. It will also give instructions about workstation procedures and information about such matters as the names of components and uses of tools. The level of detail of this advice and information will be automatically tailored to the individual needs of the apprentice, who will be able either to ask specific questions or seek general guidance. An important means of communication will be through natural language. The system will have the ability to understand continuous speech about the domain of interest. (Modified author abstract)
