Studies of Metabolism, Function and Mechanism of Destruction of Red Cells.
Abstract
The authors report includes data regarding the effects of propranolol on hemoglobin oxygen affinity and red cell shape studied in vitro and in vivo. The authors also report the effect of hemodialysis on red cell organic phosphates and oxygen binding to hemoglobin. Studies are included on the role of blood pH changes in the elevation of red cell 2,3-DPG of subjects with hypoproliferative anemia. Studies were also conducted on the role of anemia in the alteration of red cell ATP concentration and the interactions of anemia and changes in plasma phosphate on red cell ATP concentration. The possible role of red cell ATP on hemoglobin oxygen binding, and the role of red cell aging on flow in capillary tubes is discussed. (Modified author abstract)
